Hey Nerds,

As our social presence grows, especially on Instragram, we’ve naturally started to post more about beer. It’s something about which this Head Nerd and my NP4L are passionate. We support many local breweries and a cidery with some regularity (only pausing for a brief stint of pandemic-related unemployment). With that, we have a well stocked fridge and enjoy a handful of beers weekly. It dawned on me that I should share with you all what we’re drinking.

So welcome to our very first Nerd Meets World: Weekly Beer Roundup. I’ll share with you what we drank, a little about the drink, and how I rated it on Untappd. For consistency, I’ll post for the previous week (Sunday through Saturday). For this very first roundup, I’ll catch you up on what we drank for August and finish with last week. Let’s do this!

August 1 – August 29

Juicy Bingo Series 2 – Wild Acre Brewing
IPA – Imperial/Double New England
7.8% ABV – 34 IBU
Rated: 4.2 out of 5 bottle caps

Port Barrel Aged Fur Slipper – HopFusion Ale Works
Stout – Imperial/Double Milk
10% ABV – 34 IBU
Rated: 5 out of 5 bottle caps

Oh my damn, this was an excellent beer. It was boozy, oakey, and sweet. Truth be told we went on a beer run to specifically buy this beer and one other from HopFusion. It was WELL worth the beerventure.

Cheesecake and Chill – Turning Point Beer
IPA – Milkshake
10.2% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.2 out of 5 bottle caps

Party Boyz 4 Lyfe – Turning Point Beer
Sour – Berliner Weisse
8% ABV -N/A IBU
Rated: 2.8 out of bottle caps

I really wanted to like this beer more than 2.8 bottle caps. It’s made with GUMMI WORMS! Unfortunately, the sour taste was just not quite right (IMHO, to each their own). Turning Point is an adventurous brewery, brewing with tons of fun and untraditional ingredients. They have MANY other sours that I do enjoy.

Old Fashioned Boatman’s – HopFusion Ale Works
Barleywine – American
12.5% ABV – 101 IBU
Rated: 4.8 out of 5 bottle caps

1989 – HopFusion Ale Works
Sour – Berliner Weisse
4.36% ABV – 4 IBU
Rated: 4.1 out of 5 bottle caps

Rosemary Plum – Locust Cider
Cider – Herbed/Spiced/Hopped
6% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.7 out of 5 bottle caps

When I bought this cider, it was a member’s only release. Locust has this fantastic membership program called the Swarm. You can buy 1 or 3 year memberships and then get a free cider for you and a friend, or a free flight, every time you visit. Right now, at the Fort Worth Location, you have to purchase a flatbread when you come in to drink to meet the state requirements for the establishment to conduct business. We highly recommend the Walla Walla (brie, mozarella, bacon, and Texas style bbq sauce) or the Seattle (nutella and bacon).

Nachos, Lemonheads, My Dad’s Boat – Martin House Brewing Company
IPA – Imperial/Double
11% ABV – 86 IBU
Rated: 4.2 out of 5 bottle caps

Frigid Underworld – Hop and Sting Brewing Company
Stout – Imperial/Double
8.9% ABV = 80 IBU
Rated: 4 out of 5 bottle caps

Black is Beautiful – Hop and Sting Brewing Company
Stout – Other
10% ABV – 60 IBU
Rated: 4.6 out of 5 bottle caps

Lion’s Share VII: Anniversary Ale – Lakewood Brewing Company
Grisette

Road Trip Snacks – Panther Island Brewing

Rated: 4.2 out of 5 bottle caps

Black is Beautiful – Brutal Beerworks
Stout – Coffee
10% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.8 out of 5 bottle caps

We’re trying to taste as many Black is Beautiful beers as possible (currently up to 6!). 100% of the beer’s proceeds are donated to local foundations, selected by each brewery, that support police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged. I highly recommend trying to find a version (or a couple) in your area.

Gusherz – Brutal Beerworks
Sout – Fruited
7.2% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.7 out of 5 bottle caps

As the name implies, made with Gushers!

6.8% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4 out of 5 bottle caps

Black is Beautiful – Panther Island Brewing

Rated: 3.8 out of 5 bottle caps

Bedford County Barrel Aged Stout (Green Wax) – Turning Point Beer
Stout – Imperial/Double
16.2% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.8 out of 5 bottle caps

Oaktoberfest – Rahr and Sons Brewing Company
Märzen
9.6% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.2 out of 5 bottle caps

We wanted to go pick this bad boy up at the brewery, but the sold out in what seemed like no time. Literally, first day it was released, well before closing! But we hunted this one down at a local store and it was worth the hunt. Aged in oak bourbon barrels to give it a nice, oakey finish.

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale – Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co.
Strong Ale -American
8.2% ABV – 19 IBU
Rated: 3.6 out of 5

Bourbon Barrel Aged Frigid Underworld Vol 2, 2019-2020 – Hop and Sting Brewing Company
Stout – Imperial/Double
11.3% ABV – 75 IBU
Rated: 5 out of 5 bottle caps

You’ll see above we also tried the standard Frigid Underworld. It’s a solid coffee stout, but the bourbon barrel aging on this beer really puts it over the edge.

Smoothie Tart: Strawberry & Plum Crumble – B52 Brewing Co.
Sour – Fruited Berliner Weisse
6.5% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.7 out of 5 bottle caps

Necrølith – Jester King Brewery

Brain Scramblies – Turning Point Beer
IPA – Quadruple
12.4% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.4 out of 5 bottle caps

Nerd Alert – Turning Point Beer
IPA – Triple New England
10.5% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.3 out of 5 bottle caps

Uh, this was a no brainer. We HAD to get this beer. It’s hoppy and delicious, just what we want in an IPA.

Rumpy – Rahr & Sons Brewing Company
Pumpkion/Yam Beer
9% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.6 out of 6 bottle caps

It feels weird simply labeling this as a Pumpkin beer. For this gem, they aged a pumpkin ale in rum barrels! RUM! Incredibly unique flavor on a pumokin beer. Worth waiting in line (in the car) for 30 minutes to purchase.

August 30 – September 5

Kush Hazy Double IPA – Community Beer Company
IPA – Imperial/Double New England
8% ABV – N/A IBU
Rated: 4.1 out of 5 bottle caps

Key Lime Pie – Martin House Brewing Company

Kookie Monster – Martin House Brewing Company
Stout – Imperial/Double
12% ABV – 46 IBU
Rated: 4.6 out of 5 bottle caps

It’s been said before about other beers, but this beer is literally like drinking a thin mint. I dare you to prove me wrong.

You might have caught on that we have very particular tastes when it comes to beer. We like beers that are strong, hoppy, boozy, or tart (for the most part).

Fun Fact: fall and winter beers are my favorite! Spiced, flavorful, and boozy–what’s not to like?

With that, I’ll leave you all to go out and enjoy a beer. Check back each Sunday as I recap what other beers we drank with a little commentary.

Cheers,
Head Nerd
