Hey Nerds,

We were planning on continuing our packing tips today, but with Texas issuing a state-wide mask order we called an audible. Let’s talk masks.

Wearing a mask isn’t a statement of politics, at least not here at NMW. It’s a responsible and conscientious move on a person’s part to help protect society. It’s protecting yourself and others. It’s showing you care.

And you know what, masks are proved to help. I could write on and on about wearing masks, but institutions like the University of California San Francisco already have. It’s worth the read. Plus, countries where the majority of the population adopted wearing masks (and followed guidance to isolate or quarantine) have seen more effective drops in COVID-19 positive cases than countries that did not. Just take a look at the incredibly robust WHO Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Dashboard.

There are a few things to remember when wearing a mask or face covering.

  • Wear your mask secure over your mouth and nose.
  • If your mask has a metal insert at the nose, bend it to create a better fit and to keep air from bypassing the mask.
  • When you need to take your mask off, place your mask on a clean paper towel. (Exterior of the mask facing down with the ties placed away from the inside.)
  • Store your mask in a clean paper bag, fanny pack, or other storage entity that you ONLY use for your mask.

These tips, as well as this handy graphic, come courtesy of DukeHealth.

Don’t forget, nerds, that there’s a proper way to handle your mask. Follow the steps on this helpful graphic from WHO. (For non-disposable masks, here’s how to properly wash your mask. They recommend washing after EVERY wearing.)

And please, please remember that masks are most effective when the majority wear them. While we want 100% adoption, 80% would make a significant difference.

Fun Fact: For cloth masks, Johns Hopkins Medicine recommends you have at least two. If you’re looking for a nerdy mask to rock out in the world, we’ve got you covered! Check out our pair of NMW masks available in our store. Likewise, you can find some slamming deals on multi-mask packs at stores like Old Navy.

So come on nerds. I know that the summer isn’t the time you want a mask on your face. They are sweaty and hot, but this asthmatic Head Nerd is doing for you. Do it for me.

[Disclaimer: I readily recognize that there are genuine health conditions that necessitate NOT wearing a mask. In no way am I arguing that individuals with a condition that falls into this category should wear a mask. I’m arguing the rest of us should. Especially for people who cannot. It’s why we get vaccinations, to help protect those who cannot.)

Mask up, Nerds! Make me proud.

Cheers,
Head Nerd
